Vail to Celebrate Shiffrin and Vonn March 29

VAIL, CO (March 27) - Residents and guests of the Vail Valley will have the unique opportunity to celebrate the success of Audi FIS Alpine World Cup champions Mikeala Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) and Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) on Friday, March 29, as the Vail Valley Foundation and Vail Resorts host a “Celebration of Champions.” The free event is slated to get underway at 5 p.m. MT at Mountain Plaza at the base of Vail Mountain, adjacent to Gondola One. In addition to special presentations, the Celebration of Champions event will also include free music, an autograph opportunity and the chance to join Vonn and Shiffrin on and around the stage for a group photo to support the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Fans will have an opportunity to celebrate the success of Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO) and Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) on Friday, March 29 in Vail.
  • The "Celebration of Champions" event will feature free music and autograph opportunities with the stars.
  • Shiffrin, 18, produced a historic sophomore Audi FIS Alpine World Cup season with four slalom victories and the season-long title, the fourth youngest in history to win the globe.
  • Shiffrin also captured the World Championship slalom gold medal in February to become the third youngest woman in history to accomplish the feat.
  • Despite missing the final three downhill races of the winter after a season-ending injury, Vonn still captured the sixth consectutive World Cup downhill title of her career, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished by either gender.
  • It was also her 17th World Cup title, breaking the women’s record of 16 she previously shared with Annemarie Moser-Proell. Only Ingemar Stenmark has more with 19.
  • The free event starts at 5 p.m. MT at Mountain Plaza adjacent to Gondola One.
  • Vail/Beaver Creek will host the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships on Feb. 2-15, showcasing athletes from over 70 nations, with an estimated 750 million worldwide television viewers and an onsite media and broadcast entourage of approximately 1,500 members.
