U.S. Selections: Aerials Recap

PARK CITY, UT (Dec. 22, 2015) – The next generation of elite aerialists kicked off their competition season Dec. 18-19 at U.S. Selections at the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, UT.  U.S. Selection events are held each December to qualify skiers for starts on the NorAm and World Cup Circuits.

Competition began on Friday, Dec. 18, with 2015 Junior World Champion Harrison Smith (Pittsford, NY) taking the win for the men. Smith stomped a full, full, full (triple twisting triple flip) for a score of 113.40. EADP West athletes Christopher Lillis (Pittsford, NY) and Nick Novak (Park City, UT) were second and third.

On the women’s side, EADP’s Tyra Izor (Duxbury, VT) performed a lay tuck, scoring 70.46 for the win. EADP West’s Madison Varmette (Park City, UT) was second and U.S. Freestyle Ski Team member Avery Driscoll (Rochester, MN) third.

Saturday’s competition saw three men from the Bristol Mountain Snow Sports Club sweep the podium. Christopher Lillis earned his second podium of the weekend, finishing first. The youngest Lillis brother, Michael, was second and EADP athlete Patrick O’Flynn (Penfield, NY) third.

After missing finals on Friday, 18-year-old Winter Vinecki (Salem, OR) laid down a solid lay full to take the win for the women. Driscoll and Izor earned their second podiums of the weekend, finishing second and third respectively.

Lake Placid, NY is scheduled host the next stop for both the World Cup and NorAm tours. The Putnam Investments Freestyle Cup will take place Jan. 14-16 and the NorAm will take place Feb. 13-14.
