OSLO, Norway (Feb. 25, 2016) – This weekend the world’s best snowboarders and freeskiers will descend upon the site of the 1952 Winter Olympic Games for X Games Oslo. It is the first time in history an X Games event will be held in Norway and only the second time in history a second winter event has been added to the X Games schedule (X Games Tignes, 2013).
Americans dominated at X Games Aspen (Jan. 28-31) where they claimed 21 total medals including seven gold. Amongst the gold medalists were freeskier Maddie Bowman (South Lake Tahoe, CA) and snowboarders Chloe Kim (La Palma, CA) and Matt Ladley (Steamboat Springs, CO), all slated to compete in Oslo.
X Games Oslo will feature men’s and women’s ski and snowboard halfpipe, as well as a big air competition held on a 190-foot-tall scaffolding structure. Women’s snowboard big air has not been held at the X Games since 2001 and it is the first time in history the X Games will feature a women’s ski big air event.
U.S. Freeskiing and Snowboarding athletes also competed on a scaffolding jump earlier this month at the Polartec Big Air at Fenway U.S. Grand Prix (Feb. 11-12). It was a historic event situated in the middle of one of Major League Baseball’s most iconic venues. U.S. team members Julia Marino (Westport, CT) and Chas Guldemond (Reno, NV) both earned podium finishes with Marino taking the win for the women and Guldemond earning third for the men.
Competition kicked off at X Games Olso on Thursday with Men’s Snowboard SuperPipe Elimination, but the skiers get started Friday with big air elimination. Joss Christensen (Park City, UT) announced on Instagram that he will not be competing due to a crash.
