Walker Strong in Worlds Opener

STONEHAM, QC (Jan. 18) – Fighting cold temperatures and tough competition 15 year-old Ty Walker (Stowe, VT) came in fifth Friday during women's slopestyle finals at the FIS Snowboard World Championships in Stoneham. Walker’s backside 720 on the third jump impressed the judges and landed her amongst her peers, most of whom are five to ten years her senior. Next up are big air finals Saturday and halfpipe finals Sunday.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Ty Walker (Stowe, VT) was the top U.S. finisher in fifth during women's slopestyle finals at the FIS Snowboard World Championships at Stoneham.
• Walker’s backside 720 on the third jump impressed the judges and placed her amongst her peers, most of whom are five to ten years her senior.
• Canada’s Spencer O’Brien took the win with Switzerland’s Sina Candrian in second.
• For the men’s slopestyle finals Ryan Stassel (Anchorage, AK) was the top U.S. finisher coming in seventh.
• Noticeably absent from the men’s podium was Chas Guldemond (Reno, NV) who struggled to have a solid landing with his cab 1260 in both runs and came in 11th.
• Next up for the FIS World Snowboarding Championships are big air finals Saturday and halfpipe finals Sunday.

It was probably one of the coldest days I have ever been out riding in! The course was good and I was glad that I kept my riding together. I was glad that I could step up my riding up because the competiton was tough. All the girls were throwing down big tricks. It was cool to see how well the other girls were riding and I am really stoked with how I did compared to everyone else for such a high level of competiton.
