U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing athletes are taking a break from summer training and heading to Mexico to do some good. 19 team members take off on Friday morning for Tijuana to build a house for a family in need.

The project—led by professional cyclist Guy East’s nonprofit Hope Sports in conjunction with More Than Sport—gives athletes from all sports an opportunity to devote time to a worthy cause outside of their sport. Riders and skiers will team up with US Speedskating athletes to complete the project.

When they arrive in Tijuana, the group will learn new skills—such as how to paint, roof, frame walls, install doors and more—and participate in the team-building component to this program. Athletes go from being competitors to working toward a common goal.

“I’m super excited about doing this trip to help build houses for families in Tijuana! It’s important that we all do our part in helping others and helping to make a positive difference in someone’s life,” says pro freeskier Ashley Battersby (Park City, UT), who will be on the trip. “I’m really honored to go down to Mexico with U.S. Freeskiing and U.S. Snowboarding and have this opportunity to give back to others. Let’s make a difference!”

Along with Battersby, freeskiing pros Gus Kenworthy (Telluride, CO), Devin Logan (West Dover, VT) and Julia Krass (Hanover, NH) will also attend, along with rookies Andy Partridge (Park City, UT), Jess Breda (Marshfield, MA), Darian Stevens (Missoula, MT), Colby Stevenson (Park City, UT), Alexi Micinski (Meridian, ID) and Birk Irving (Winter Park, CO).

U.S. Snowboarding riders attending include pro team member Eric Beauchemin (Grand Blanc, MI), rookies Chandler Hunt (Park City, UT), Hailee Mattingley (Sandy, UT), Julia Marino (Westport, CT), Maddie Mastro (Wrightwood, CA) and Brock Crouch (Mammoth Mountain, CA), snowboardcross riders Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City, UT) and Jackie Hernandez (Londonderry, VT), and alpine snowboarder racer Justin Reiter (Steamboat Springs, CO).

Guest speakers will address the group throughout the weekend—many of them with Olympic ties—in order to help the athletes see the importance of using their platform and visibility to give back to both their local and global community.

Keep up with the athletes’ progress on U.S. Snowboarding's FacebookTwitter and Instagram pages throughout the weekend.
