Telemark Hosting Junior Nationals

CABLE, WI (March 6, 2016) – Telemark in Cable, WI will play host to yet another prestigious race to be added to the repertoire, the annual 2016 USSA Cross Country Ski Junior National Championships, March 6-12. The hallowed trails of Telemark have hosted cross country ski races since 1973 including the first ever World Cup, the American Birkebeiner, a 2013 IPC Nordic Skiing World Cup race and the 2015 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships.

For the first time, the Junior National Championships will be held in Wisconsin and Central Cross Country Ski Association (CXC) will be hosting the races on the Telemark Trails. Junior Nationals draws over 500 of the top 14-19-year-old skiers from 10 different teams in the United States for a week of hard-fought competition, ranging from sprints to distance individual events and relay racing.

Athletes have competed in several qualifying races throughout the ski season to advance and be selected for the Junior National Championships. The qualifying races mirror the races that skiers will have to compete in at Nationals. The Junior Nationals race schedule includes a 10/5k individual classic race, a 1.3/1.0k classic sprint, a 15/10/5k freestyle mass start and a 3x3.3k freestyle team relay.

All races will be streamed live for friends and family to watch and enjoy, courtesy of Central Cross Country Ski Association.

8:30 a.m. – Classic Sprint – Qualifying 1.3/1.0 km U16 M, U16 F, U18/20 M, U18/20 F
11:30 a.m – Classic Sprint – Heats

Friday, March 11
9:00 a.m. – Freestyle Mass Start 15k/10k/5k

Saturday, March 12
9:00 a.m. – Freestyle Relay 3x3.3k

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Telemark has been hosting ski events since 1973, which was the very first year the American Birkebeiner was held.
  • The first documented U.S. Junior National Championships was in 1969, which was hosted in Girdwood, Alaska on the Alyeska Trails.
  • This is the first year in history that Wisconsin will host Junior Nationals.
  • The highest point of the 5k Junior National course at Telemark is 1,627.3 feet.
  • There is also a 3.3k course for the team relay and a 1.4k course for the sprint races.
  • 150 volunteers and 40 support staff are needed to host Junior Nationals in Cable, WI.
