From lifelong friendships to powerful life lessons to everlasting memories of thrilling victories, there are many reasons for your kids to play sports.

As a parent, you can encourage your kids to participate in, or at least try, youth sports. With so many other factors and activities pulling them in different directions, it’s important to properly frame and discuss the many rewards of playing sports.

Liberty Mutual Insurance Play Positive™ sat down with U.S. Freeskiing Head Halfpipe Coach Andy Woods to get his thoughts on the importance of playing sports along with the life lessons he learned.

In our exclusive TAKE 5 interview Andy told us that he believes the biggest life lesson taught by sports is a very simple, yet very powerful one:

“Teamwork,” said Andy.

Andy added that sports also provide kids with “good social development” within their peer group, and shared that many lessons his father taught him as a youth athlete stay with him – and are passed on to the athletes he coaches – to this day.

“My father was always a firm believer in committing to the team and holding to your convictions, which I try to remind my team of now,” said Andy.

Andy said that the sport of skiing offers several compelling reasons for kids to practice and compete out on the hills and slopes.

“Skiing is not only a lot of fun, but a great social atmosphere for young athletes,” said Andy, “This is all important in their growth as young adults.”
