In so many ways, Julia Mancuso’s bronze medal was more golden. Eight years ago the Squaw Valley native showed the world that she was a big event skier who thrived when the chips were down and conditions were poor. Fast forward to Monday and Mancuso, after leading the super combined downhill, put together the singlemost  important slalom run of her career to take her fourth career medal – becoming only the third U.S. Winter Olympian to do so.

ALPINE

  • Julia Mancuso earned a bronze medal on Monday in women’s super combined.
  • Mancuso is the first American skier in history to win a medal in three straight Olympic Winter Games with her bronze in a super combined event at the Rosa Khutor alpine center.
  • She is the most decorated U.S. Olympic skier with a total of four medals and is now the only American woman to win a medal of every color in alpine skiing.
  • Leanne Smith finished 20th in the downhill but could not finish her run on the steep and icy slalom course.
  • Stacey Cook and Laurenne Ross did not finish the downhill.
  • Mancuso and the women will be back to take on downhill on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

CROSS COUNTRY

  • Kikkan Randall is at the top of her game, looking very favorable for a medal based on practice rounds.
  • The Olympic cross country freestyle sprints are scheduled for Tuesday.
  • Women’s starts include: Kikkan Randall, Sophie Caldwell, Ida Sargent and Jessie Diggins. Men’s starts include: Andy Newell, Simi Hamilton, Torin Koos and Erik Bjornsen.

FREESKIING

  • The women’s slopestyle team hit the course on Monday for one more training session before Tuesday’s first-ever slopestyle skiing Olympic event.
  • The halfpipe team enjoyed a leisurely day of settling in to their new accommodations in the mountains.
  • Some athletes opted to shred the mountain and explore the terrain of Rosa Khutor while others ventured into the village for some media activity and shopping.

FREESTYLE

  • Patrick Deneen posted the top American finish in moguls, coming in sixth.
  • Deneen put up a strong fight but fell short against almost flawless skiing from Canadiens Bilodeau, Kingsbury and Russian, Smyshlyaev.
  • Brad Wilson finished in 20th.
  • Aerials training continues on Tuesday.
  • The women compete on the Friday, Feb. 14 and Mac Bohonnon, the only U.S. male competes on the 17th.

QUOTES
Pat Deneen
The Canadians have a few really strong skiers and today they showed that. The course is pretty crazy. It's a little different than it was yesterday and we have to adapt to that each time. It's part of the sport though and it's something we know and adapt to as much as we can. The course didn't freeze last night like we wanted and it was warmer today which definitely had an affect on the hill.

NORDIC COMBINED

  • On Monday, nordic combined athletes participated in a successful in-venue media day with turnout including Reuters, AP, New York Times and more.
  • In practice, athletes took two jumps instead of three due to hill preparation.
  • The opening nordic combined competition is scheduled for Wednesday.

SKI JUMPING

  • Women's ski jumping training was underway again on Monday in preparation for historic competition Tuesday evening.
  • Sarah Hendrickson, Jessica Jerome and Lindsey Van will form the Team USA lineup for the women’s ski jumping debut.
  • In Sunday’s men's final, the U.S. failed to advance to the final round.
  • The next competition for men’s ski jumping is Friday.

SNOWBOARDING

  • Weather continued to plaque the halfpipe with a final training session Monday evening.
  • The men’s final is scheduled Tuesday with Greg Bretz, Danny Davis, Taylor Gold and Shaun White set to go for Team USA.
