ALPINE
Julia Mancuso posted the best American finish in eighth at a rough and unforgiving super G Saturday, the final women’s speed event of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games.
The Olympic veteran has led the U.S. women in all alpine speed events at the Rosa Khutor mountain venue as well as earned bronze in the super combined.
A difficult course set by Austrian Florian Winkler plus temperatures in the 40s yielded soft, rutted snow and DNFs in seven of the first eight racers, including Laurenne Ross.
Leanne Smith was the first racer to make it down the course cleanly, but finished 18th after the rest of the field adjusted to the rapidly changing snow conditions.
Stacey Cook ran 29th but was bounced by the uneven snow and crashed. Fortunately she emerged uninjured in her final race of the 2014 Sochi Games.
A men's super G follows on Sunday with Bode Miller, Ted Ligety, Andrew Weibrecht and Travis Ganong starting.
CROSS COUNTRY
Team USA left it all on the course Saturday but was not able to keep pace and finished ninth at the women’s 4x5k relay of the 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games.
The relay was staged amidst the third day of spring-like temperatures at the Laura Cross Country Ski Center, where the athletes battled against overheating during the demanding relay.
World Champion Jessie Diggins anchored Team USA in the final freestyle 5k, while fellow World Champion Kikkan Randall kicked off the relay off with a classic leg. Rookie Sadie Bjornsen ran the second classic leg with Liz Stephen switching to freestyle for the third leg among an immensely talented field of skaters.
The men hit the course for the 4x10k relay Sunday.
Starts include Andy Newell, Erik Bjornsen, Noah Hoffman and Simi Hamilton
FREESKIING
The men’s halfpipe skiing team had the day off and went freeskiing at Rosa Khutor.
The athletes are preparing for their sport’s Olympic debut on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
FREESTYLE
The men take to the aerials hill for qualifications and finals Monday, Feb. 17.
NORDIC COMBINED
Nordic combined continued training for its large hill event Tuesday, Feb 18.
SKI JUMPING
Nick Fairall led Team USA finishing 35th on a windy night at the RusSki Jump Center for the large hill event.
The USA wraps up the Olympics Monday with the team event.
