SALT LAKE CITY, UT (Sept. 21) – On Saturday, October 20, U.S. Freestyle Ski Team athlete K.C. Oakley will join dozens of others at the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and Jill’s Legacy: Jog For Jill, a 5k walk/run at the University of Utah. Oakley co-founded Jill's Legacy in 2010 following the loss of friend Jill Costello to lung cancer at the age of 22. Oakley's aim through Jill's Legacy is to raise awareness about lung cancer, advocate for lung cancer victims and raise funds for lung cancer research.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • U.S. Freestyle Ski Team athlete K.C. Oakley co-founded Jill's Legacy, a lung cancer advisory board, in 2010 in honor of her late friend Jill Costello.
  • Jill's Legacy will be hosting the Jog for Jill 5k walk/run at the University of Utah on October 20, 2012.
  • Seven other Jog for Jill events will be taking place at universities around the United States. For a listing of events, visit www.jillslegacy.org/events.html.
  • Despite its perception of affecting only smokers, lung cancer also affects many lifelong non-smokers, including Costello. Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer.

QUOTES

K.C. Oakley, U.S. Ski Team Athlete

Jill's final written words and last message to us was "Beat Lung Cancer Big Time!", and that is what Jill's Legacy is out to do. We do it in her honor, and for all those who have fought this disease, one Jog for Jill at a time. Lung cancer deserves the attention other cancers get without the negative stereotype that it is a smoker's disease. Anyone can get lung cancer and they deserve the respect and efforts put forth for any other cancer patient.
