Ligety 3rd in Garmisch Giant Slalom

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (Feb. 24) - In his first race after taking triple gold at the World Championships Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) finished third in the Audi FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom in Garmisch. Ligety has now finished on the podium of all six World Cup giant slalom races this season with four victories and two third place finishes. He leads the discpline standings 520-415 over Austrian Marcel Hirscher, who was second to Frenchman Alexis Pinturault in his career first GS win.


  • Triple World Champion Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) was third in Audi FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom held in Garmisch.
  • Ligety was fifth after the first run, .66 behind German Felix Neureuther, who tied for 12th with Tim Jitloff (Reno, NV) after a big mistake.
  • Frenchman Alexis Pinturault claimed victory for the first giant slalom win of his career. Austrian Marcel Hirscher was second.
  • Ligety has been on all six World Cup giant slalom podiums this season (four wins, two thirds) and leads Hirscher 520-415 in the discipline standings.
  • The men's tour now moves to Kvitfjell, Norway for a downhill and a super G.
  • Ligety and Jitloff will head to Sochi, Russia to train on the 2014 Olympic venue prior to Kvitfjell.
  • Universal Sports Network will broadcast the race at noon ET.

Third place is not what you want to be getting at this stage, but I’ll take it. In the first run I just made a ton of little mistakes and in the second I was lucky not to get into too much soft snow.

You have to take risks to be on the podium, but the soft snow made it pretty tough to push the line anywhere.

It’s cool to see Alexis get his first win in GS. Either way it’s a win for the Shred team today.
