Fletcher, Demong Lead in Penalty Race

KLINGENTHAL, Germany (Jan. 27) - Bryan Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, CO) capped a strong weekend in Klingenthal with an eighth in a FIS Nordic Combined World Cup penalty format race. Fletcher jumped to seventh and dropped back one spot, skiing two penalty laps. Eric Frenzel led the jump and won his fourth straight in dominating fashion to lead a German sweep of the podium. Billy Demong skied up from 24th in the jump to finish 12th. The tour now heads to Sochi for a pair of Olympic test events next weekend.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Bryan Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, CO) jumped to seventh and finished eighth in a penalty format World Cup in Klingenthal.
  • Billy Demong jumped 24th and was the last competitor to make the cut with four penalty laps. He skied up to 12th.
  • The penalty format assigns a certain number of additional short laps to each athlete based on jumping results with the cross country portion opening with a mass start. Rules specify a maximum of four penalty laps so any athletes further back in jumping do not get a chance to ski cross country.
  • Despite being within easy striking distance of the top 10, Taylor Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, CO was 29th in the jump but did not have an opportunity to ski cross country.
  • The tour now swings down to Sochi for Olympic test events next weekend.
