Final Tune Up for World Championships

OTEPAA, Estonia (Feb. 19, 2017) – Sadie Bjornsen (Winthrop, WA) led the USA in 19th at the final World Cup event before next week’s 2017 Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland.

Norway’s Marit Bjoergen continued her torrid pace winning again over Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla in Sunday’s 10k classic. Two other American women made it into the points along with Bjornsen, including Rosie Brennan (Park City, UT) finishing 24th and Liz Stephen (E. Montpelier, VT) 29th.

Jessie Diggins (Afton, MN) opted to sit out the race to rest for World Championships.

Norway’s Martin Johnsrud Sundby won the men’s 15k classic, besting second place finisher Iivo Niskanen of Finland by 37.1 seconds. Norway’s Hans Christer Holund was third. Erik Bjornsen (Winthrop, WA) was the top U.S. finisher in 36th.

The teams now head to Lahti, Finland for the 2017 FS Nordic Skiing World Championships, where the first race will be the freestyle sprint on Thursday. Opening ceremony is Wednesday evening.
