MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, CA (Feb. 7, 2015) – The Sprint U.S. Grand Prix slopestyle skiing and halfpipe snowboarding events scheduled for Feb. 7 at Mammoth Mountain, CA have been canceled due to adverse weather conditions. Olympic medalists Joss Christensen (Park City, UT), Gus Kenworthy (Telluride, CO) and Nick Geopper (Lawrenceburg, IN) were all poised to compete in Mammoth Mountain’s Unbound terrain park, but a foot of heavy wet snow blanketed the course and wind gusts up to 65 mph caused the event officials to cancel the event.

“It’s unfortunate that Mammoth put some much work into building a really good halfpipe and slopestyle course” Christensen noted. “But we tried and hopefully we’ll come back to Mammoth for another really good contest.”

Riders such as Kelly Clark (West Dover, VT), Chloe Kim (Torrence, CA), Taylor Gold (Steamboat Springs, CO) and Greg Bretz (Mammoth Lakes, CA) were ready to throw down in the pipe, but the heavy snow and wind took its toll on the halfpipe as well, bringing event organizers to cancel halfpipe snowboarding finals.

“It was a tough week with the weather,” said Clark. “Mammoth did such an incredible job building and getting this event ready, but unfortunately when weather comes in like this it’s something that’s out of your control. The event organizers did the best job they could making the right decision for the riders.”

The Sprint U.S. Grand Prix tour continues in Park City, UT Feb. 26- Mar. 1.

QUOTES

Joss Christensen, Olympic Gold Medalist
We woke up this morning to a foot of wet and heavy snow and now it’s raining and blowing wind. It’s unfortunate because the course has been pretty fun, we had two really good practice days the first days we got here in the beautiful Mammoth sun and it’s just unfortunate that Mammoth put some much work into building a really good halfpipe and slopestyle course. I know they were struggling for snow and worked hard to put this together but hopefully we’ll come back to Mammoth for another really good contest.

Kelly Clark, 2015 X Games Silver Medalist
It was a tough week with the weather. Mammoth did such an incredible job building and getting this event ready, but unfortunately when weather comes in like this it’s something that’s out of your control. The event organizers did the best job they could making the right decision for the riders. You hardly ever see event organizers do what’s in the best interest of the riders and for snowboarding. But today they did that. They weren’t going to force us to go in conditions that weren’t safe and weren’t going to showcase the best of our efforts.
