How Ski Clubs can be Community Oriented

Monday, Nov. 16, 2015

The strongest ski and snowboard clubs are ones that are positioned to be community development partners rather than just sports organizations. Many USSA clubs get involved with community initiatives, collaborate with a numbers of community partners, perform service work in their communities, and some even require community service hours from their student-athletes. This approach will:
  1. Make the club more relevant and known in the community,
  2. Increase the club’s base of support,
  3. Improve retention, and
  4. Improve the performance of both the club and individual athletes.

The Clubhouse:  Be sure to tune in to the Club Programming Webinar as part of the USSA Club Excellence Workshop series on November 19th at 11am MST, and don't forget to catch up on any that you've missed.

It also takes a lot of community support and volunteers to successfully run our clubs. It can be very powerful and effective to quantify the amount of volunteer efforts it takes to support your club. Here is a simple resource to track and quantify all of the volunteer hours devoted to your club. This can be useful in thanking the community, or in other advocacy and fundraising activities.

Coaches Corner:  Make sure you are signed up for full access to the Center of Excellence TV video collection that is a benefit of your USSA coach membership. This features hundreds of video clips including coaching tips, skiing exercises, drills, U.S. National Team athlete and coach interviews, SkillsQuest and more. Your USSA member athletes also have access to this collection, we encourage you to share these videos with your skiers.

To access go to //www.dartfish.tv/ussa. If you have not done so already you will need to create an account using your email address. Find your free members-only content in the video collections titled “Members”. In addition, look for great content in Sport Science, Sport Nutrition and more to help you this season.

If you have any questions or problems accessing your content, contact USSA Sport Education at education@ussa.org.

Education Update and Clinics Schedule:  Thank you to everyone who showed up this past week at Copper! We hope you found it fun and educational.
Here is the most updated version of the clinic schedule by discipline: Alpine, Cross Country, Freeski, Freestyle, Nordic, and Snowboarding.

Parent Perspective: Parents (and coaches and athletes), here is an excellent 6-part series on The Brain with neuroscientist Dr. David Eagleman.

Featured Athletes:  This post features the three athletes chosen by Ted Ligety from the #WhatMakesAChamp contest: Auden Pankonin, Colin Rathbone, and Dasha Romanov. Representing clubs across the United States, these athletes shared some great stories, so be sure to check out their winning entries!
