Mt. Hood isn't a bad place to grow up, just ask Sammy Carlson. The young park maestro grew up only a few minutes down the road in Tigard, OR. Being a local at the park and pipe summer camp mecca paid off, as Sammy started collecting X Games hardware in 2007 with a silver in slopestyle. Since then, he's won four more X Games medals including his first gold in 2011

Perhaps more famously known for landing one of the first triple cork 1260s on skis, Carlson is renowned for super-progressive park skiing with an unreal rail presence.

Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury in January 2012. He focused his efforts on healing and came back in 2013 to compete in the Dew Tour and X Games, but devoted most of his time to his playground: the backcountry. Carlson produced a stellar 90-second edit for ESPN’s Real Ski Backcountry contest, displaying backcountry skills mixed with his own super-progressive skiing style. Beating out tough competition, Carlson won gold and an extra $50k!

SAMMY SAYS
The backcountry is one of my most favorite places to be. It’s such a great way to incorporate slopestyle into all-natural settings, and I love to play with that creativity. It was a highlight to win the Real Ski contest because I worked my butt off filming that. I am stoked to be healthy again and to train hard this summer and fall, then hopefully make some waves so that I can get to Sochi!

FIRST TRACKS
He was four years old when he first went out with Mom and Dad at Mt. Hood. Carlson remembers, “My whole family skied a lot and they always encouraged me to ski the whole mountain, which sparked the love I have for diverse skiing. When I was young, I saw Eric Pollard skiing the park and was addicted. I remember doing my homework and secretly watching ski video’s at the same. I made sure to keep the remote close so I could turn it off or keep the volume low if my parents came in.” He started attending Windells summer camp at age 12. After that, freeskiing was more-or-less full time.

OFF THE SNOW
For the last three years, Carlson has been involved with the Northwest Autism Foundation. He volunteers his time when he can and participates in a fundraising dinner and golf tournament. He says, "A nephew of our family friend of has autism. I met him a few years ago and wanted to help him out because he’s a cool kid. It was inspiring to meet him." Carlson also works with Talk About Curing Autism.

Philanthropy aside, he's got a movie project in the works called On Top of the Hood, while his Sammy Carlson Invitational (SCI) is in its second year. "I created SCI because it’s cool to push our sport and get the riders out to where I first started skiing and everyone can experience it." When home in Hood River, you can find Calson in the gym, on the tramps and continually training.
