S.M.A.R.T Goal Setting

S.M.A.R.T. Goal Setting

Using a SWOT analysis or other method - identify critical success factors and potential barriers. This will facilitate efficient goal setting, enabling you to create a handful of short and long-term goals. Aim for turning opportunities into programs and overcoming weaknesses by using strengths. Don’t waste time worrying about factors that cannot be controlled. Instead, address them creatively.

Keep in mind the S.M.A.R.T. method of goal setting, and make all goals and objectives:

  • Specific

  • Measurable

  • Action - Oriented

  • Realistic

  • Timed

This method of goal setting is the only way that goals and performance can be measured and assessed over time.

Once the goals are set, identify the strategies to reach each goal. Which strategies align best with your values, staff and budget? What tactics will you employ and how will you evaluate your progress? Goals can be adjusted. Keep an open mind and hold yourself accountable for revisiting your goals.

These same methods can be adapted to working with your athletes when setting their personal goals.
